Project Elephant, launched in 1992, remains among the key programmes supporting elephant conservation in India. Other initiatives, including the use of Kumki elephants and H.A.N.U.M.A.N., focus on rescue operations, monitoring and efforts to ease human-elephant conflicts.
World Elephant Day has been observed since 2012 and calls for stronger action to protect elephants and their habitats. The day also encourages people to avoid ivory and support conservation efforts aimed at preserving elephants.
With India accounting for more than 60% of the world’s wild Asian elephant population, the country remains central to efforts to safeguard the species. Conservation measures, including Elephant Reserves, rescue initiatives and conflict-management programmes, continue to play a crucial role in protecting these ecosystem engineers amid threats such as habitat loss.
